Essential Question:

How can we uplift and celebrate our AAPI community?

My name is Latanya Lockett and I am the performing arts teacher at High Tech elementary Chula Vista. Arts integration and building community are two huge passions of mine. This trimester I wanted to combine these two passions while uplifting and celebrating our AAPI community throughout our 3 schools in Chula Vista. Together with our 5th grade class the Spread Asian Love project was born.
Distance/hybrid learning has been quite the challenge, but it actually became an inspiration to dream up this website. How could the students learn from community members synchronously and asynchronously? I decided to reach out to students, parents, and friends that would be willing to teach us about their culture through movement, dance and even food! The response was overwhelming and soon we were zooming with experts not just in our community but even as far as Korea! Our 5th graders helped choreograph our multicultural dance by combining all of the movements we learned and created. They had the opportunity to learn from and engage in conversation with so many experts in their fields. They learned the power of storytelling through movement, and they became ambassadors of the Spread Asian Love movement. Thanks to our amazing experts 5th graders were able to learn about the Philippines, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, China, Hawaii and Tahiti, and now you can too!
Please take a look at our EXPLORER page to try an activity and learn about a new culture. Please check out our music video which is a joyful multicultural dance combining Tahitian dance, Kali, Taekwondo, traditional dances of the southern Philippines, tiktok dances AND our own original moves!
Thank you for visiting our website!!!
